This 6-week literacy rich program is designed to help children adjust to a school atmosphere and learn skills and concepts that will help them succeed in Kindergarten.

With one adult teacher for every 6 children, children will become part of a caring, inviting, and safe learning community.

The program is offered free of charge to eligible families.  Our mission is to serve those who may not have access to other programs.  However, spaces may be available to children who can afford minimal fees.

Since 2008, A Good Start has served over 260 families and children who are entering kindergarten in the Fall.  This literacy rich program is a partnership between Maynard Avenue United Methodist Church, Ohio Wesleyan University and Neighborhood Services, Inc. with support from many other local social service partners.

We believe in developing a child's confidence, understanding how to be a part of a learning community, and grow in their love of learning.

We believe nurturing trusting relationships with children and their families, and connecting them to school and social services, builds the community we serve.

We are committed to each child's experience and empowering each family to advocate for their child now and throughout their educational career.

Our daily program mimicks a typical Kindergarten day in order to provide children practice and exposure to the expecations that will be in place when they enter Kindergarten.

Families are encouraged to be an active part of the experience through weekly communication and workshops and through collaborative events with local partners.
